Response to Announced Workforce Reduction at the Queensway Carleton Hospital
Ontario hospitals should have the resources they need to protect patient care and support frontline workers.
Yesterday, I released a statement and sent a letter to Health Minister Sylvia Jones in response to Queensway Carleton Hospital’s announcement that it will reduce staffing levels due to financial pressures.
Doug Ford claims his government is making record investments in Ontario’s healthcare system. But the reality is clear: Hospitals are being forced to do more with less. The Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) announced the layoffs of 87 RNs, a deeply concerning decision that will impact both frontline workers and patient care. With some of the longest wait times in the province, this will only make matters worse at QCH.
This government has its priorities all wrong. Ontario needs to adequately fund our public health care system, invest in access, prevention, and community care, and ensure hospitals have the resources they need to provide the quality of care Ontarians deserve.

I am very pleased that you have made this comment about the nursing staff at the QCH in Ottawa. Members of the public province wide, need to hear this. Put it on TV often. I tried to e mail you two months ago about our awful family doctor who was never available and would not let us make an appointment with another doctor in the clinic. We have now found a wonderful family doctor! Something should also be done about hospital diagnostic machines which the Ontario Government refuses to fund. You have to publicize these important matters. Pay for service is not a good way to keep doctors available to the people. Some doctors only want more money. Since April of 2026 we continue to have wonderful continuing care from many doctors and nurses in the QCH and Ottawa General Hospital.
